Understanding Garment Measurements
When working with garment patterns imported from the EU or Japan, measurements are typically drafted in metric centimeters and meters. In contrast, US pattern layouts rely entirely on fractional inches and yards.
For accuracy in garment design:
- Fabric Width: Bolts of fabric are manufactured in standard widths. A width of 150 cm is equivalent to a standard 60-inch width.
- Seam Allowance: A common 1.5 cm seam allowance equals approximately 5/8 of an inch. Using the incorrect allowance can ruin the fit of the sleeve or collar.
