Avoid these frequent math, rounding, and scale factor errors in drafting and design.
1. Intermediate Rounding Errors
One of the most common pitfalls is rounding decimal values in the middle of a multi-step calculation. For example, if you convert meters to centimeters, round to one decimal place, then convert those centimeters to inches, you compile small rounding discrepancies.
Mathematical Protocol:
Always perform all multiplication and division steps using full decimal floats (IEEE 754 double precision) first. Only apply rounding constraints at the very final step when outputting the user-facing result.
2. Confusing Decimal Inches with Inches and Feet
When converting a metric height like 1.8 meters to imperial, the decimal calculation yields exactly 70.866 inches.
A common mistake is writing this as 5 feet 10.87 inches, but incorrectly shortening it to 5.10 feet or 5.87 feet.
Remember:
70.87 inchestranslates to5.906 feet, because70.87 / 12 = 5.906.- It does NOT mean 5 feet and 90 inches.

3. Mixed Denominator Errors in Carpentry
DIY woodworkers often convert metric layouts (e.g. 1.75 meters) to decimal inches (68.8976") and try to find that directly on a standard tape measure. Tape measures do not use decimals; they use fractions of 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 of an inch.
To convert 0.8976 inches to the nearest 1/16":
1. Multiply decimal remainder: 0.8976 × 16 = 14.36
2. Round to the nearest whole integer: 14
3. Simplify the fraction: 14 / 16 = 7 / 8
