1. Spacing Studs & Wall Layouts
In North America, standard framing layouts run on 16-inch or 24-inch stud centers. In metric blueprint designs (common in international products and modular construction), layout dimensions are listed in meters or millimeters.
When layout drawings state a spacing like 0.40 meters, this equals 15.75 inches. To align with standard US building elements, framing crews typically snap grids at 16 inches rather than copying the decimal offset, which prevents sheetrock panels from hanging in empty space between framing members.
2. Drywall & Plywood Clearances
Drywall sheets are commonly manufactured in 4ft x 8ft panels (48" x 96"). A metric equivalent product is typically 1200mm x 2400mm. A 2.4-meter panel is slightly shorter than an 8-foot panel (2400 mm vs. 2438.4 mm), leaving a 1.5-inch gap if standard imperial sheets are mixed into a metric remodel project.
Always verify:
- Is your tape measure dual-unit (metric on top, imperial on bottom)?
- Are you calculating "Nominal" lumber dimensions (e.g. a 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5")?
- Have you accounted for saw blade kerf (typically 1/8" or 3mm) when mapping multiple cuts?
